There are no more lazy days of summer. Practice here, deadline there, and a new

opportunity that sounds great somewhere else; from every direction, something or

someone is vying for our attention.

Do you ever wonder if you have what it takes? To get to all the events, evaluate every

opportunity, to make all the right decisions? And if you don’t, will your world fall apart?

No. But often times we feel on the verge of failure in the face of constant expectations.

Given the world we live in, no one can wave a magic wand and simplify it. Modern life is

on constant full speed ahead where everyone is competing with everyone else. Families

strive to be happy and balanced, yet we find ourselves off and hurried to the next

scheduled event.

Take time to make sure your time is being well invested:

Establish a not-to-do list: Many of us have a to-do list. You see them on calendars on

phones, on computers, in day planners and on lists in the grocery store. But rarely do

you see not to do lists. Do you have the ability to say no to non-essential commitments

of your time? Opportunities to do more are abundant, but without healthy boundaries

we grow weary. My not-to-do list is simple but defined. Example: I do not do nights or

weekends unless it benefits my family. That eliminates stress and demonstrates my

priorities. Make your not-to-do list, it will foster simplicity.

Do something fun: Everyone needs a healthy outlet that reduces stress. For me that is

tennis. It is fun, good for my mind and body, and it has a positive impact on the

relationships in my life. The competition keeps me striving to improve and the social

environment is fun. Where is the fun in your life? Does it have a positive impact on your

work and home? Take time to invest in a healthier you, your performance will benefit

and you will be happier.

Take time for yourself: Time alone is rare but required for a balanced life. For me, it

may be 5 AM, but that time to think, pray and reflect is critical to the rest of my day. It

is during that time that I consider what and who are important, my key goals for that

day, and eliminate things that I can’t get done. It is amazing how a few introspective

moments can impact a busy day. Take time for yourself everyday, it will help focus on

sound decisions while eliminating stress.

We all want to be successful at home and in business. Ironically, we can want it too

much by trying too hard. Success requires discipline and the ability to prioritize while

letting go of everything that is not important.

To do, or not to do, that is the question? Take time to answer that question with every

commitment. You just might achieve more balance and get more done!
