My Psalm of Protection

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the

Almighty. This I declare about the Lord; He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is

my God, and I trust Him. Psalm 91; 1-2.

When I was seventeen, an intruder entered our home and shoved a gun in my face. Living

as a latch key kid was great until that fearful moment, but it took only one event for my

life perspective to change. After an intense struggle, I escaped with only a busted lip. He

ran away, scared that my screams had been heard by neighbors, bur for me the fear

remained.

Two years later, it was a different gun. As head teller of a bank, I was summoned by

another teller. Her eyes were filled with terror, and she said quietly, “he has a gun.” The

robber flashed the handgun at me, and I knew this was real. I went to the vault and got all

the tens and twenties, as he requested. He left with the money, but again my fear

remained.

For years I went through a lengthy routine of checking every lock and closet as I prepared

to go to bed at night. Any noise brought about a memory of those two guns. One day

someone told me about the “Psalm of Protection,” Psalm 91. I began to read it aloud

every day. In a short time, I had it memorized, word for word.

As I have grown in my faith year after year, God has taught me that His Word is true.

Today, I am proud to say that God has delivered my from that debilitating fear and used

every word of Psalm 91 to combat the lies in my head with the Truth of His protection.

Now my bedtime routine has changed; instead of checking closets and locks, I thank God

for his angels that surround me everyday.
