Many of us remember the song “Just Another Manic Monday” and we can still sing the

chorus. Monday gets a bum wrap most of the time. It’s the end of the weekend; it’s when

the alarm clock shakes us from our slumber; and it probably means another pointless

meeting to start the work week. Right?

I remember the first staff meeting of my professional career like it was yesterday. It may

seem corny, but I was excited and had given much consideration to participating. I read the

agenda and prepared discussion and arrived early, eager to do something to make myself

visible and the new job relevant.

Prior to the bosses arrival, I sat quietly waiting in the conference room with the others.

During this time, as I listened my enthusiasm tanked. Two of the seven complained about

the meeting, others commented on the latest policies and procedures and why they would

never work. It seemed no one shared my enthusiasm.

Right there in my midst was the perfect picture of what I never wanted to become. Being

in the corporate world is challenging, but with the right mindset you can set yourself apart

from others by choosing an intentional attitude that is sure to gain the attention of the

leaders in your organization.

·         Be positive, not negative. Too many people complain the majority of their

workday, and they are often the first to be overlooked when a promotion

arises.  Positive people influence others and breed a better environment.

·         Do not be late, it is a glimpse into your priorities and tends to keep you in

catch up mode all day long. Make time to be on time.

·         Prepare for every meeting seeking information that brings about

solutions to problems.  Gather details and provide data that demonstrates

      solid ideas.

·         Be a team player. Be committed to the company, not just your position.

Speak highly of your superiors, no company will ever be perfect and you

will never agree all the time.

·         Be different! Be the one who brightens the atmosphere of the office by being

your best everyday. Make everyone wish they could hire another you.

·         Learn something everyday. No one likes a know it all, but most admire

others eager to learn. Seek mentors who can teach you what you need to

know in order to prepare for promotion.

It is the epitome of the cliché’, is your cup half full or empty? It is not your genetic make up or family

history that determines your cup. Your attitude determines it, and your attitude is the most important

decision you make every day. It affects job performance, family dynamics, and it will ultimately determine

success.

Is it just another Manic Monday? For many, that is all it will ever be. For the few who set standards above

the norm, every Monday is an opportunity to be your best.
